Occurring when your nasal cavities become infected, a sinus infection can be very uncomfortable, and even painful. It is usually caused by a virus and can last for a time. There are other causes; bacteria, allergies, nasal polyps, and even tooth infections.

The symptoms of a sinus infection include;

Pain – There are sinuses above and below your eyes, and behind your nose. If these cavities become infected, they swell causing a dull achy feeling. The pain can spread to your forehead and to either side of your nose. There can even be pain in your jaws and teeth.

Discharge – You will be blowing your nose more than usual when you have a sinus infection. The discharge that comes out will be green or yellow in color and comes from the infected sinuses. For some people, they may feel this discharge running down the back of their throat. It can cause you to cough when lying down and can make your voice sound hoarse.

Congestion – Restricted breathing is super uncomfortable and common with a sinus infection. Your nasal passages will be swollen and your senses of smell and taste will either be diminished or completely gone.

Cough – When your discharge drains down your throat rather than your nose, it can cause irritation. Your cough will be at its worse when you’re lying down, meaning that sleeping can prove difficult. You should try sleeping with your head elevated.

Headache – The pressure from your swollen sinuses can give you symptoms of a headache as well as an earache, and pain in your jaws. When you wake up your headache will be at its worst as the fluid has been collecting all night.

You should make an appointment to see your doctor if these symptoms persist for more than 10 days, or keeps coming back after you have treated it.
