Having A Child With Eczema: What Can You Do

Unfortunately, some children are born with a skin condition called eczema. It is a medical condition which causes areas of skin to become rough and inflamed. Blisters form and become itchy. When someone itches these, it causes bleeding. There is not usually an obvious external cause. The truth is, in spite of the fact that the skin condition can be uncomfortable, it frequently looks a considerable amount more painful than what it feels like to your child. There are various diverse ways that you can treat children with eczema that can lessen the pain of eczema for your child though there is no actual cure.

You need to remember that while your child might look cute and adorable in those pretty dresses or fancy shirts but these can be very unforgiving to their skin. Synthetic fabrics do not allow the skin to breathe and your child may become too warm, start sweating and it can exacerbate their condition. This will lead to extra sores, extra itching, and extra pain. If you try to keep your child in more natural fabrics such as cotton, their skin will be much more free. These natural fabrics are ‘breathable’ and allow for air to reach their skin.

As well as the fabrics they wear, you need to be wary of the creams and lotions you use on their skin. If you are bathing them in a regular soap or using perfumed moisturisers etc on their skin you are again exacerbating their condition. You should stick to the most natural products you can find, or else go to a doctor and ask them to prescribe something that can help alleviate their pain. They can prescribe topical creams such as steroid creams which can help to ease itching and blisters and help avoid any infections.

Back to the subject of fabrics. When you’re washing your child’s clothes, which is probably quite often, you need to ensure that there are no chemicals in your fabric softener or detergent. These chemicals and/ or perfumes can promote blisters forming, inflammation, and soreness. You can find non-bio detergents and softeners in almost every supermarket, and the good news is that they aren’t more expensive!

Finally, you should keep an eye on the amount of itching your child is doing. They do not have the sense or ability to stop themselves and therefore you have to help stop them. If you can get some mittens for them at night, and try to train them to use moisturiser rather than their nails to soothe any itching they’re experiencing. The more they itch, the worse their sores will become, and the higher the risk of infection so do try to keep this at a low.

While there is no cure for eczema, it is a condition that a lot of kids do grow out of eventually. While some people are unlucky and do not ever grow out of it, there are ways to maintain the condition. Cutting down on pork and dairy is thought to help, as is cutting out alcohol (though we are aware this is not applicable to children!). If you feel like you want to consult a doctor about your child’s condition and it’s connection with their diet, it is a great idea!
